Tman INTP 5w4/1w9/4w5 Sx/Sp ILI Like Lady X said before, I was more describbing the practice of attacking revered and ancieint ideas or insatutions in favor of radical new ideas rather then litteral vandism. The actual, litterlal inconclasts were probably mostly 6w5s and 1w2s. 0 2020-04-06 03:43:41pm (post #7887) |
Jacobus INFJ 4w5 EIE It was still a violent, superstitious practice. You don't explain your typing of them. 0 2020-04-05 03:51:56pm (post #7875) |
Tman INTP 5w4/1w9/4w5 Sx/Sp ILI The original incolasts destroyed Icons, not out of hatred of the holy, but out of an (admittedly misplaced) respect for the holy, it came out of the old testament comdanets that "though shalt not create graven images." Even when this instic is at it's worst, when it is amungst the percuters of other religions, you still find at least a pretenns of respect for the holyness of there own religoion. 0 2020-04-05 03:35:42pm (post #7874) |
Jacobus INFJ 4w5 EIE I can understand that line of reasoning but I'm unable to not take the original, literal meaning. The Iconoclasts were influenced by the successes of the Muslims to destroy religious art and iconography in an attempt to win back the favor of God. They weren't at all 5ish or 4ish in ideology, they were a narrow-minded, superstitious group. Regarding the Taliban's destruction of the Buddhas, they weren't acting purely out of hatred for iconography. Groups opposed to them were using tourist revenue and NGO funds for their own military funding. So the exact reason for literal iconoclasm cany vary (the Soviets and the Maoists also engaged in it), but it's never out of a desire to create something new. It's always out of a desire to destroy something old and venerable. cp6 makes sense to me. 0 2020-04-05 03:28:50pm (post #7873) |
LadyX intp 5 My original cp6w7 vote was for the physical destroyers of icons, including neo-cons who catalyzed the latest round of ancient site defacing. But I could see tmans point of view with a 5w4 vote for those who reject traditional focal points and invent new iconology - a symbolic rather than historical group. Jacobus - what would your vote be? 1 2020-04-05 02:51:22pm (post #7872) |
Tman INTP 5w4/1w9/4w5 Sx/Sp ILI Thats completly unfair. While they did often suport cesnership, as far as I can tell, the Iconoclasts were not, you know, murders and terroirsts. 0 2020-04-05 06:07:58am (post #7871) |
Jacobus INFJ 4w5 EIE Iconoclasm literally means destruction of icons/images (of which the Buddhas certainly counted). The name comes from a certain heresy that flourished briefly in the Byzantine Empire before being quashed by the Second Council of Nicaea. The "original" iconoclasts were closer in views and aims to the Taliban. 0 2020-04-05 03:25:59am (post #7862) |
LadyX intp 5 The "iconoclasts" who defaced the Buddha were unlikely 5w4. Figuratively, 5w4 is routinely reinventing and unconcerned with cherished symbols- they are the real iconoclasts. The Buddha-destroyers did not replace what they destroyed with anything -- fake iconoclasts. 0 2020-04-05 02:49:06am (post #7856) |
