If we look at Thor's underlying motivations in Thor 1, Thor 2: The Dark World, and in Thor: Ragnarok, his priorities and attitudes shift between The Dark World and Ragnarok. Thor 1 and Thor 2 are classically about Power & Control - particularly, the hubris of feeling entitled to such things. Thor refuses to recognize how his flaws - his arrogant, belligerent, and violent nature - would make him a terrible king, but he wants the title desperately regardless.
